May 22, 2024
Dunhill Construction’s Houston City Hall Basement Renovation project, substantially completed in September 2023, has been selected as a finalist for the prestigious Houston Business Journal Landmark Awards in the Rehabilitation/Restoration category. This recognition underscores Dunhill's dedication to excellence and commitment to serving the Houston community.
"The selection of our Houston City Hall Basement Renovation project as a finalist for the Houston Business Journal Landmark Awards is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our team," said Aaron Polatsek, Principal of Dunhill Construction. "We are incredibly proud to have played a part in revitalizing such a vital civic space and contributing to the well-being of our city."
In the aftermath of the devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey in 2017, the Houston City Hall basement required extensive renovation. Dunhill Construction embraced that challenge.
The renovated basement now serves as the home for the brand-new walk-in Houston 311 call center, a crucial hub for citizen services and information, as well as a wellness center for city employees, employee training rooms, a lounge and breakroom, a storage area, and several conference rooms, including the mayor’s conference room—featuring a 40-ft custom oak table.
Preserving the historical charm of the 1930s-built Houston City Hall posed a distinctive challenge. The historic art deco interior, adorned with plaster crown detailing and ornate wood trim, harmoniously coexists with modern amenities, creating a space that pays homage to the city's rich past while catering to contemporary needs.
Environmental sustainability was also a key focus throughout the project, with the incorporation of LED lighting, energy-efficient HVAC systems, and low VOC materials. This commitment extended to choosing furniture that promoted flexibility and minimized potential waste in the event of a future flood.
A distinguishing feature of the project was the fabrication and installation of two extremely heavy submarine-style custom flood doors, ensuring the structural fortitude of the Houston City Hall basement and safeguarding it against potential flood events.
Dunhill Construction is honored to have been selected as a finalist for this prestigious award and looks forward to continuing to serve the Houston community.
